From a letter sent to William George Miles, Jr., 16 September 1996, by Brenda Joyce Jerome, Western Kentucky Journal. "Peter Bebout was born ca 1823 OH and died 16 Apr 1862 at Columbia, Maury Co, TN during the Civil War. He was the son of Abraham Bebout and Elizabeth Van Ostrand. Peter Bebout married Harriett C. Wilson, daughter of John E. Wilson and Harriet Brooks, 23 July 1845 Crittenden Co, KY. Harriet was born Dec 1824 and died 16 Jun 1908 and is buried at Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Crittenden Co, KY. Peter Bebout enlisted in 20th Regt, KY Vol Infantry. His widow, Harriett C., received a widow's pension - #14620. A deposition was given by Lewis Thomas 19 Nov 1869, when Harriet applied for a pension: Lewis Thomas stated that he was a private in Co D 20th KY Regt US Volunteers... that Peter Bebout was a private in same company and regiment; they served together until the death of Bebout, which occured 6 Apr 1862 at Columbia, TN. He was well acquainted with Bebout from the time they entered the army. He stated Bebout had the fever, contracted while in the service of the US and in the line of his duty; that he was taken with chronic dyareah [sic] while on the march from Bowling Green [Warren Co, KY] to Shiloah and was left by command at the hospital in Columbia, TN and Thomas was left sick at the same time and place and was present at the time of Bebout's death. He stated that a physician at the hospital stated at the time that Bebout had what he called the galloping consumption and some disease of the heart which caused his death."

2. Marion James Bebout was born 25 May 1848, Crittenden County, Kentucky; died 9 Dec 1908, Hardin, Illinois; was buried , Good Hope Cemetery, Karbers Ridge, Hardin County, Illinois.
3. Robert Bebout was born 1849, Kentucky.
4. Elizabeth Jane Bebout was born 16 Dec 1849, Crittenden County, Kentucky; died 23 Apr 1883, Crittenden County, Kentucky; was buried 1883, Crooked Creek Cemetery, Crittenden County, Kentucky.
5. Rebecca Pernecie Bebout was born 10 Apr 1851, Crittenden County, Kentucky; died 8 Jan 1929, Crittenden County, Kentucky; was buried , Piney Fork Cemetery, Crittenden County, Kentucky.

"BENJAMIN [Bebout 6911-2482], b. Dec. 4, 1758. He served in the Revolution. Samuel H. Phillips, a grandson of Lieut. Col. David Phillips [6917-2466] and Sarah Bebout [6912-2465/2466] (No. 23), wrote the pension office that his grandmother [Sarah Bebout 6912-2465/2466] had three brothers in the Revolution, Peter [6907], John [6909-2505], and Benjamin [6911-2482]. He had often 'talked with Benjamin, who lived to be 90 years old, and I am now 80' (b. 1835). He said he was one of the Minute Men (Letter of Apr. 25, 1905, in Pension Office). Benjamin Bebout applied for a pension claiming service under Capt. Gavin McCoy in the First Regiment of Somerset Co., militia; enlisted in Bernards township Aug., 1777, and was at the battle of Springfield, June 23, 1780. He resided in Washington Co., Pa., on Aug. 22, 1853, the date of his application (Pension Office, Rejection No. 646). His application was not rejected on the ground of a denial of Revolutionary service, but because the length of service was not sufficient to meet the pension law. After the Revolution he married Dec. 7, 1784, HANNAH MORTLETT [6955-2482]. With his wife and five children he migrated to Washington Co., Pa., where he lived over sixty years. His wife d. Feb. 11, 1830. He made his will at Paris, Pa., on Sept. 23, 1854, and died Nov. 8, 1857, within a month of his hundredth birthday. His will was probated Dec. 2, 1857 (Will Book Court House Washington, Pa., VIII:1)."

[He was a soldier of the Revolution and belonged to the Minute Men against the
Indians of the frontier of Washington County at the close of the Revolutionary
War.]"

HISTORY OF THE CROSS CREEK GRAVEYARD, p 16: "HANNAH BEBOUT, wife of Benjamin Bebout, died February 11, 1830, aged 66 years. [She was the mother of 18 children: 11 sons and 7 daughters. She was a native of New Jersey. Many a cup of water she pumped and gave to General Washington, when he passed her house during the dark days of the Revolution.]"

"History of Ashland County, Ohio", Geo. Wm. Hill, M.D., William Bro., 1880, pp. 205-206 Peter Van Nordstrand, Sr. was born in New Jersey, and after the close of the Revolutionary War emigrated to Westmoreland County, PA. His ancestors were from Holland. In 1816 he came to Clearcreek Township, Richland (now Ashland) County and located on section thirty-five, where he deceased in 1817, aged about fifty years. He had been a neighbor to the Baileys and Brytes in Westmoreland County, and was inticed to settle in the wilds of Clearcreek because of the emigration to that region. A brother-in-law, Archibald Gardner, located in Mifflin on the present site of Windsor in the spring of 1811 and forted at Reams in 1812. Mr. Van Nordstrand's sons were John, who subsequently removed to, and deceased, in Iowa; Isaac, who also located in Iowa; and Peter, who continues to reside in Clearcreek Township. The daughters were: Elizabeth, wife of Abraham Bebout; Anna, wife of William Andews; Rachel, wife of David Urie; Effie, wife of Alexander McCready, Eleanor, wife of James McCool, Margaret, wife of Michael Shoup; Mary, wife of David Bryte; and Sarah, wife of John Mykrantz. Peter married Nancy Shaw and is now about seventy-two years of age. He states that when his father landed in Clearcreek, there were but eight or ten families in the township. The first schoolhouse in his part of the township was a little cabin of round logs, erected on the farm of the late Abraham Huffman, in 1817. The children of the following householders attended, Mr. Robert Nelson being the first teacher: Abraham Huffman, John Brown, Andrew Stevison, Robert Ralston, Widow Triegle, David McKinny, Rev. William Matthews, Levi and Thomas Brink, Widow Mary Van Nordstrand, and the children of Robert Nelson. The country was in its primitive condition, game was plenty, and the Indians from Sandusky hunted annually in the forests of Clearcreek for a number of years after the arrival of the first settlers. They were harmless, and rarely visited the cabins of the pioneers, except when they were driven to do so from pinching hunger. Peter Van Nordstrand, Jr., occupied the old homestead until about 1872, when his wife deceased. He is now residing with a son-in-law. He has been an exemplary member of the Christion Church for over thirty years. His wife was also a devoted member of the same church. It is rarely that men, in a single community, witness the changes that have taken place within this county in the last sixty years. From an almost unbroken forest, the hills and valleys of thes county have been reduced to cultivation, and every township teams with abundance. Schools, villages, and towns have sprung into being, as if by magic. From a few hundred the inhabitants of the county have multiplied until our population reaches over twenty-three thousand. The Indian that roamed over the hills and along the fertile valleys of this county, has long since removed to the far west, and his race will, ere long, become extinct.

"JOHN BEBOUT [6707-2464], by at Piscataway, N.J. Aug. 25, 1729, ^ married about 1747, when apparently he was only 18 years of age, MARY THURMAN [6906-2464]. He settled at Vealtown (Somerville) in Somerset Co., N.J. This was about six miles across the valley from Long Hill in Morris Co, [NJ], where his brother [Peter 6708-2393/2437] lived. He joined the Presbyterian Church at Basking Ridge, N.J. The family tradition is to the effect that John Bebout served in the Revolutionary War, but actual military service has not been found. He served in the Department of the Quarter-master General, for on June 28, 1780, he received from Joseph Lewis, Quarter-master at Morristown [NJ] Certificate No. 1098 for $186.00 for carting, up to April 13, 1780 (MSS. 4287, p. 9, Adjutant General's Office, Trenton, N.J.). Again on July 31, 1781, he received from Timothy Pickering, Quarter-Master General, Cert. No. 2882 for the sum of $5.60 for similar work (Quarter-Master General's Dep., Book A, Voucher 230). After the Revolution he moved first to Sussex Co., N.J., and shortly afterwards to Washington Co., Pa., about 1786. There he was listed in the Federal Census of 1790 as having a son over 16 and a daughter. The son might have been Daniel [6915]--the other children had all married--and there he died June 21, 1803. Children of John Bebout, all born in Somerset Co., N.J. The dates of birth are taken from a manuscript, 'BEBOUT ANCESTRY,' compiled by Mrs. Sarah Bebout Paddock [8439-3004] of Mt. Vernon, O., who copied them from the Bible record."
