Notes - [Broderbund WFT Vol. 7, Ed. 1, Tree #0129, Date of Import: 25 Jul, 1998] divorce action Harriet vs Geo Dec. 1886 & Geo vs Harriet Dec 1889 According to grandson, Ben Fryar, he hauled salt to the L & N railroad - Logan & Lee trail Chicago to Shawneetown. Supposedly couldn't read or write, but had great math aptitude. Knew logarithms, land areas, etc. Called Ben "Manus". Ben & Harold Kniffen would tease him by reading the paper with wrong info. Sometimes he could read - don't know how he learned. "Old Man Cat-o" He gave violin from Germany to Nick Kniffen - he gave it to Ben. Jack took it to Chicago (LaGrange) to get it fixed - ruined it? Conway Twitty may be relative. Friar's Point MS may be connected. Unverified stories passed down by G.W. Friar - his father? grandfather? owned a steamboat to haul freight between St. Louis & New Orleans. Had 30 slaves - hauled cotton - treatede children badly. George & Walt & sister ran away near Cairo or Mounds, IL & lived with Harry Braumeier. Name was Sherman Tecumseh Friar- changed to George Washington. Mother (stepmother?)was Drennan Married at W A Clark, Spring Garden, IL Aug 9, 1889. Witnesses: Walter Fryer, Harry Pickett, WA Clark, P.M. (Police Magistrate) Conversation between Wilma Hungate & Bertha Webber December 1992: Grandpap (Atchison) was something else. He never wanted to see a kid paddled. He had arthritis very bad. Grandparents Ignatius & Mirie Atchison raised 12 children. Grandpap was burned in fire. HE didn't die, but was burned so bad he died later. He had been sick for 2 or 3 days and hadn't eaten. Gaston was there & he went to the store to get Ignatius some food. As he came home he could see smell something burning & could hear Ignatius moaning & groaning. He said he got cold & was standing with his back to the fireplace, fell backward, and burned him so bad some of the meat fell off his bones. He lived a couple of days.
